Is spring break breaking local culture? | Eco-logically Speaking

Rebecca Good March 25, 2025
For those who decide to go on vacations, it's exciting to travel with new friends and explore new destinations on a college student's budget. This “budget” often includes cheap flights to affordable locations. Unfortunately, our itineraries have lasting effects that we as tourists often don’t take into consideration—ones that are not plain and simple.

Seeking solace out of the city is easier than it seems

Siena Griffin September 16, 2024
Being a college student in Boston supplies a seemingly endless list of things to do. However, the city, despite all of its perks, can undoubtedly be overstimulating — and I’m frequently struck with the need to escape.

Seat lottery jackpot | Things I’ve Learned From Strangers

Lili Culhane April 10, 2024
Sometimes, when you’re flying alone, you hit what I like to call “the seat lottery jackpot” and are sat next to the dream team. On my last flight, for spring break, my friend Sarah was sitting next to two other BU students and ended up making a group chat with them and taking a selfie. The group chat has never been used since, but the selfie was proof that there was a sense of trust and camaraderie in the moment that could never be shattered. Is that not the most beautiful thing you’ve ever heard?

Some of you are arriving at the airport way too early

Lina Barclay February 12, 2024
My friends saw this text and asked me when my flight was supposed to take off, and I told them it was 11 p.m. They stared at me with open mouths and wide eyes. This gawk is the typical response I get when I explain my airport arrival psychology: I arrive at the airport about 40-60 minutes before my flight is scheduled to depart.

For viewers of crime genres, these shows provide eerie, intense and thrilling feelings that are all too familiar. ‘Euro summer’: Do travelers value experience or appearance?

Lea Rivel November 17, 2023
Seeing posts about European travel and its commodification made me realize that “Euro summer” is about more than just vacationing. The phenomenon has brought to light travelers’ ability — or lack thereof — to be culturally sentient and understand the world around them in a nuanced way, even if in limited quantities.

Comfort or chaos?: Thanksgiving proves to be a struggle for some students

Michelle Grullon November 17, 2023
You might assume the people walking around campus when the majority are home stayed in Boston because of travel issues or the unwillingness to spend upwards of $100 for a trip that lasts less than a week. But no one considers the small group that just doesn’t want to go home or doesn’t even have a home to return to.

Reflections on traveling home for the holidays: it’s not as easy as it seems

Samantha Marshall November 13, 2023
With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and school break, I’ve found myself in much need of a break from school, but mildly stressed about how to travel 400 miles home for this shorter break. While I can make it home in a day, it poses a bit of a challenge trying to coordinate how exactly I will get home. And for some of my friends who live even farther away, the short break means it would be impossible to go home due to distance and coordinating travel plans.
