These things seem really simple, but they took a lot of effort. The cycle of self-hate is a vicious one, and I’ve realized that breaking away from it  takes a lot of work. 

The world is enraptured by female suffering. A woman with substance abuse issues, mental illness or unhealthy relationships with men is the subject of drama, entertainment and intrigue. People gather to see her on screen in “Euphoria,” “Fleabag” and “Game of Thrones.” And she’s not necessarily fictional, either — books, music and movies are sensationalized by their creator’s borderline martyred reputation, as with Sylvia Plath, Amy Winehouse, and Marilyn Monroe. 

When I got accepted into BU, I expected that feeling to continue and perhaps transform into something new and more powerful. Surprisingly though, I was wrong and have had the privilege of feeling so welcomed and accepted by all the people I have met.

The 2014 documentary "Queens of Syria" was screened at a BU virtual event March 2 with a following Q&A session Thursday. The film depicts how dozens of refugee women fleeing Syria banded together to perform a Greek tragedy "The Trojan Women," creating art through their grief.
