Boston celebrates Pride month while weary of corporate support

Charlie Johnson June 14, 2024
As Boston recognizes Pride month in June, there is a cautious eye on how companies and organizations display support for the celebrations.

Is it possible to be more than ‘Only Friends’? | You Had Me At ‘It’s Gay’

Kal Hawley November 14, 2023
“Only Friends” is a queer Thai series that follows four college students and their messy relationships. In classic sex comedy fashion, everyone is interested in everyone else, everyone likes to get drunk on a Tuesday night and, even though they’re college students, they never seem to study for anything.

This is how you write a love story | You Had Me At ‘It’s Gay’

Kal Hawley November 7, 2023
I did not pick up “This Is How You Lose the Time War” by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone because of the beautiful cover art, the intriguing summary or even the review comment from Madeline Miller herself. Rather, I picked it up because of a tweet I saw four months ago

Keep an eye out for “The Magnus Archives” this Halloween | You Had Me At ‘It’s Gay’

Kal Hawley October 30, 2023
What intrigued me about “The Magnus Archives” was not the supernatural tales themselves — although those were so wonderfully written that even an anti-horror enthusiast like myself could enjoy them — but rather, the wonderful cast of intriguing characters that you meet.

Where are the lesbians?

Kyla Smith October 29, 2023
There are a limited number of lesbian novels depicting young people which are not entirely about coming out, dating games or involving some supernatural, fantasy element — especially ones that have come out in the last 10 years.

There is no real way to “look gay”

Lea Rivel October 26, 2023
Media has often shown society that the way to show that you’re a queer woman (whether that be lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or any other label), is to dress more masculine, carry yourself a certain way or overtly wear rainbow colors. Because of this, people often have a narrow perspective of how we look and dress.

I’m Hock-Gay for ‘Check, Please!’ | You Had Me At ‘It’s Gay’

Kal Hawley October 10, 2023
“Check, Please!” is a comic about Eric “Bitty” Bittle, a closeted figure skater turned hockey player who attends the fictional Samwell University in Samwell, MA. It will have you grinning ear-to-ear from a sweet romantic moment and then gut punch you with the most poignant and deep introspection on what being queer and falling in love truly means.

You Had Me at ‘It’s Gay’

Kal Hawley October 1, 2023
Hi, my name is Kal Hawley. I’m 18 years old, and I am so, so queer. And whether you are too, or you’re not sure yet, or you’re just bored and scrolling through The Daily Free Press, I hope this column can help you find something a little more interesting than a forced romance between two characters who really were better as friends or the “shy girl inexplicably wins the heart of popular guy” trope.

Guest Writer May 4, 2023
After finding nothing but support and community in LGBTQ+ spaces, I found myself at an extremely low point in my life explicitly because of the Queer Activist Collective.

Toxic masculinity, stereotypes and the performing arts | All Things Theater

Maia Penzer February 22, 2023
We must not only reduce the stigma around the art of performing, but also open a discussion about the adverse effects that descend from harmful labels placed on those in the industry.

REVIEW: ‘YOU’ season four

Lydia Evans February 14, 2023
“YOU” season three ended with Joe killing Love and following Marienne, the newfound victim of his deadly passion. It should have ended with Love killing Joe, so we could watch her as the new main character of the show.
