At its core, this shift isn’t about literature — it’s about looking like a reader. Books have become an accessory, a personality trait and a status symbol. As a result, people are reading more visibly than ever. The joy of getting lost in a story, of struggling with complex ideas and of truly reading seems to be fading.
Esports and video games are a great thing, and their communities have the potential to reflect that even more. However, they demonstrate with particular clarity the systemic factors that facilitate an epidemic of sexual assault. They are the same factors that plague our world outside of gaming, including our own lives as Boston University students.
This ideology of politicizing science — such as Trump’s politicization of the COVID-19 pandemic — already has and will continue to have large-scale consequences in the real world.
Domestic violence often escalates until someone gets seriously hurt or loses their life. We cannot let it continue as women, girls and men die at the hands of these abusers. This is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately or our women will continue to suffer.
