As soon as the curtains pulled back and the set pieces rolled in, I was amazed by the level of detail that went into the set. The smoky cigarettes that nearly every performer totes around the stage add another layer of sensory detail that brings you physically into the world the show is recreating.
At its core, this shift isn’t about literature — it’s about looking like a reader. Books have become an accessory, a personality trait and a status symbol. As a result, people are reading more visibly than ever. The joy of getting lost in a story, of struggling with complex ideas and of truly reading seems to be fading.
Though there is nothing wrong with having an opinion — after all, we as an editorial board note twice weekly the importance of having a strong stance on a topic — we need to normalize not having one all the time.
