Has reading become a performance?

At its core, this shift isn’t about literature — it’s about looking like a reader. Books have become an accessory, a personality trait and a status symbol. As a result, people are reading more visibly than ever. The joy of getting lost in a story, of struggling with complex ideas and of truly reading seems to be fading.

Now that “brat summer” has had its time, I declare Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy season officially open. Her style — effortless and undeniably chic — is a timeless blueprint for the colder weather, with a sort of elegance that speaks quietly but powerfully. In fact, Bessette-Kennedy never gave an interview — she always let her clothes do the talking.
