A simple cup of black coffee may be the ultimate symbol of mundanity. Plain and pedestrian — black coffee serves as that quick hit of caffeine before a long day of work or a long night of studying. But in the reflection of the darkness of a simple cup of black coffee, Patti Smith sees a way of life — the life of an artist.

MFA brings art, stories of female artists to life in all-female exhibition

August marked the 99th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the U.S., and the MFA has been working to pay homage to underrepresented women who changed art in an effort to include more “diversity, inclusion, and gender equity” in their exhibits, according to the museum’s website.
