When College of Engineering sophomore Brian Zhou took over the @bostonu Instagram account Feb. 9., he shared his experiences and insight as a Boston University student with the page’s 118,000 followers. But that same day, he also received a racist comment from a troll account.

Our definition of beauty is subjective, and it can grow and change to include a diverse range of features, traits and ethnicities. The first step is to get rid of the seemingly harmless trends that perpetuate Eurocentric beauty — they’re clogging up my “For You page.”

The problem with appreciation is when it turns into appropriation. It’s sad that Black women are being ripped off of their ideas or looks day after day, while others monetize their aesthetic.
