At its core, this shift isn’t about literature — it’s about looking like a reader. Books have become an accessory, a personality trait and a status symbol. As a result, people are reading more visibly than ever. The joy of getting lost in a story, of struggling with complex ideas and of truly reading seems to be fading.
You might assume the people walking around campus when the majority are home stayed in Boston because of travel issues or the unwillingness to spend upwards of $100 for a trip that lasts less than a week. But no one considers the small group that just doesn’t want to go home or doesn’t even have a home to return to.
Freedom can make us anxious. It can impact us all differently, and it may even exacerbate inequality. But it gives us the ability to create meaning for ourselves, and it allows us to be the unique individuals we all are.
The Massachusetts Republican State Committee voted unanimously to oppose ranked-choice voting in a committee resolution last week, citing voter disenfranchisement and election-rigging concerns. Ballot Question 2 will ask voters in November if the state should switch to a ranked-choice voting system.
