At its core, this shift isn’t about literature — it’s about looking like a reader. Books have become an accessory, a personality trait and a status symbol. As a result, people are reading more visibly than ever. The joy of getting lost in a story, of struggling with complex ideas and of truly reading seems to be fading.

BU’s Institute for Global Sustainability hosted its first annual three-day CAFÉ Climate & Health Conference on Monday as part of a three-year $6.7 million grant funded by the National Institutes of Health for a climate-health research initiative led by the BU School of Public Health and the Harvard T.H. Opening a cafe geared toward personalized peanut sandwiches next to a children’s museum was a fairly irresponsible decision. However, with the precautions parents already take to protect their children from allergic reactions, along with additional guidelines from the museum, the restaurant can still manage to keep a safe environment for everyone.
