Beyond the world of Dobrik and his Vlog Squad, we need to learn that abusers aren’t always what we stereotype — shady characters who wear a trench coat or live as social outcasts. Abusers can be funny, popular or even kind.
Cancel culture is appealing because it gives those participating in the “canceling” the false satisfaction of justice being served. But those who value true justice must caution against cancel culture and recognize it is the very thing it hopes to destroy: injustice.
BU needs to make a constant commitment to the cause, actively work to ensure students’ safety, dismantle the prevalent rape culture on its campus and establish trust so students will be willing to speak up and report assailants in the first place. It will never be as easy as one quick, overnight policy change.
