Boston University College of Communication freshmen Staci Hunter and Jamie Lin have turned their dorm rooms in Warren Towers into a slice of heaven for dessert lovers with Pie Charters, their new homemade pie business.
“My neighbor said, ‘If college doesn’t work out, you should just start a pie company,’ so that’s what we’re doing,” Hunter joked.
With slogans such as “B U hungry,” the students said they attract students on campus using Facebook and Twitter accounts, which are managed by Lin.
“[Hunter] is the talent. I’m just the business side of the relationship,” she said.
Lin said making pie is still doable, despite not having access to an oven in Warren. The pies take about 20 minutes to make and then sit in the refrigerator for six to eight hours.
“[Hunter] just mixes ingredients together, like pudding, whipped cream, etc. and she makes the pies,” Lin said. “Then we just put the put them in the fridge for a while and they’re good to go.”
Hunter said her motivations for starting the business were simple.
“I just love to make pie,” she said.
The idea for the small business came up last weekend, after they experimented with making pie in the dorms for fun, Lin said.
“Honestly, we were just talking about how we needed money and then [Staci] was like, ‘I want to make a pie. I haven’t made a pie in a while,’ and then we were like, ‘Let’s make pies and sell them,’” Lin said.
Pie Charters charges $2 per slice and $10 per pie, with “specialty pies” costing an extra $2, according to the business’ Facebook page. They limit deliveries to BU students for the time being and charge a delivery fee for those living off-campus.
They opened up shop this week, Lin said, with several student customers who live in Warren taking advantage of their neighbors’ hobby. So far, she said, they have sold multiple slices and one pie.
COM freshman Rachel Podber, who lives on the same floor as Lin and Hunter, called the pies “amazingly delicious.”
The fall varieties offered include banana cream, key lime and peanut butter, Lin said. They also hope to introduce pumpkin as soon as they can find canned pumpkin in stores. They said they plan on switching it up by creating a seasonal menu, though Lin said they have not worked out the details.
“It would be a little hard for us to hack up a whole pumpkin in the common room,” Lin said.
Some students said that while they might not have heard of Pie Charters yet, they are definitely open to trying dorm-made pie delivered right to their rooms.
“Well, I’ve never heard of it, but it looks delicious and [I] would give it a shot,” said Katie Kennedy, a freshman in Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
Other students said that they are eager to try the seasonal flavors.
“I can’t wait to try ones of these pies,” said Brooke Mele, a School of Education freshman. “All of their flavors sound so good, it’ll be hard to pick.”
