In the wake of Athletic Director Mike Lynch’s resignation at the end of June, Boston University has hired Aaron Aaker as the new Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Strategic Planning. The appointment was announced Monday by interim Athletic Director Drew Marrochello.

“Boston University is very fortunate to add someone to our senior staff who has the extensive experience that Aaron does,” Marrochello said in a statement. “His growth and responsibilities at Boston College made him an ideal candidate to run our compliance department and head our strategic planning. We’re happy to have him here.”

Aaker’s duties include ensuring that all department and university staff are in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. As part of his strategic planning title, Aaker will liaise extensively with numerous offices on campus, most notably the financial aid office. In the long term, Aaker will both make recommendations for the future of BU’s athletic programs and establish multiple committees.

Prior to joining the Terriers, Aaker worked for Boston College’s athletic department as its Assistant Director of Athletics. In seven years there, he led the compliance program for 31 varsity sports and over 700 student-athletes. During this past year, 10 varsity teams earned perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores while the Eagles football team earned a 981 APR score – the eighth-highest mark in the FBS division and far above the average of 956.

From 1999 to 2007, Aaker worked for the University of Missouri in multiple capacities. He began as a compliance assistant while earning his PhD in physiology before moving onto the role of financial aid compliance office and later Assistant Director of Compliance.

Aaker attended the University of Mary in South Dakota, where he was a cross country and track and field student-athlete before graduating in 1993 with degrees in physical education and behavioral science.
